Today we will discuss: 

The issue of how it will benefit Toronto high school students who are accustomed to using social media but they do not know how to get the most out of it, nor do they know about many of the challenges or security issues that we have learned about in class.

Today we will teach: 

We will teach them how to have a “Digital Footprint” in a professional manner and ways for them to still use social media for personal use.

 Questions to ask: 

  • How do I create a Digital Footprint?
  • What comes up when searching there name?
  • What they want professionals to view them as?
  • Would you want an employer or teacher to see that?
  • What do you want it to show and say?
  • How can I promote myself?

How we will present: 

We will do this through a video showing the steps though a high school students journey leaving high school and entering there University or job field by showing what there digital footprint looks like.

#2—Using Google

Tutorial Activity # 2

This blog post is dedicated to perfecting the use of google and ensuring the knowledge of how to search of specific results properly; resulting in efficiency.

1. How would you search for an exact word or phrase?

To search for an exact word or phrase on google you would have to use a word you expect to appear on the target page to refine the results. To get more specific search result, simply add quotation marks around the word or phrase to find where exactly that word comes from.

Eg: Shakespeare or “Shakespeare”

2. How would you search for something on a specific site?

The quickest way to search for something specific on the site a person could use the short cut “Control F” it’s a easy way to find a specific word on the site when you are reading a long article or document on the site. Another way to search for something specific on the site would be to add a site operator in to the search. An operator is something extra you add into your query to filter the results, which filters the result and limits results to only from that website.

3. How would you correctly search for a definition?

Searching for a definition is easy. simply type in the word you wish to be defined on google search ( or any other search engine you are using) and add “define” before it. This filters out useless search results.

Eg: “define ubiquitous”

4. How would you search for a specific product available within a specific price range?

Looking for prices on google is easy. simply enter the product name and then the lowest price range and the highest price range separated by two periods.

Eg: Speakers $25..$150

5. How would you search for a specific file type?

On Google when searching for a specific file type you simply need to type into Google “Filetype” followed by the file extension you are looking for.

Eg: Filetype: (PDF, DOCX, JPEG)

6. How would you include or ignore words in your search?

Including and ignoring words in google searches is easy and logical. To include words simply type in “+” and to ignore words type in “-”.

Eg: +Mary +Lamb -Snow

7. How would you find related pages?

If you find a site you like and wish to search for similar sites all you have to do is type into google “related” then the URL of the site you are looking for similar results to.

Eg: related: http://www.forever21.com

8. How would you find a topic, searching all available synonyms of a word?

On Google a person would find a topic searching all available synonyms of a word by adding this symbol: [~] in front of the key word they are searching for.

Example: ~toothpaste

9. How would you find the time in another country?

On Google a person could find a time in another country by writing [Time] followed by the countries name to find the specific time of that country and google will process the request and give the proper time in that country

Example: Time: Australia

10. How would you find out how many Egyptian pounds you get for $20 Canadian dollars?

On Google a person would find out how many Egyptian pounds you get for a $20 Canadian dollars by searching [currency1 country] in [currency2 country]. Another way on Google would be to go to the Financial sector on Google where you put in your search and its comes out with the results.

Example:[ $20 Canada to Egyptian]

#1—Digital “Netiquette”

Since the emergence of the internet in the 90s there has been a major sociological shift in terms of social behaviors. From a young age we are taught how to act in public, how to treat others, and how to interact in a variety of social settings. However the internet offers a new type of society; a global society that allows you to be completely anonymous while interacting with people all over the world. With this anonymity come power; the power to speak your mind without any repercussions; If you say something offensive in a chatroom to someone you don’t like, you’ll never have to worry about running into them in person ( if you’re careful with your online profile). Along these lines; comes the problem of cyber bullying, cyber stalking, and general “rules” of online interaction.  But why does online interaction have to have different rules than real life. If you wouldn’t say something to someone in person you shouldn’t say it online. Growing up parent are constantly teaching their children “treat others the way you would like to be treated” but so often online we see that that is not the case. A perfect example would be youtube stars like Rebecca Black that get ridiculed by the online community and even death death threat.—for what? for posting a video? I think that with the school systems integrating such technologies and teaching how to use the internet and its resources, they should also be teaching kids what is acceptable behavior and why. I believe that if we teach digital etiquette from a young age we can limit inappropriate digital behavior.
